How to Keep Wedding Guests Comfortable, Even in Cooler Weather

Every couple hopes for ideal weather conditions on their wedding day, but they’re doing just that — hoping. There’s no way to ensure the weather cooperates, but as an engaged couple or wedding planner, you can ensure guests are comfortable no matter what Mother Nature throws your way.

Many couples have their sights set on an outdoor ceremony and we can’t blame them! Outdoor ceremonies are beautiful. Unfortunately, they have one major downside — the uncertainty of the weather. When couples don’t know what to expect, they don’t know how to prepare. So, what’s the best option? Prepare for every possibility.

    Cold conditions

Outdoor ceremonies Rent patio heaters and place them near where guests will sit. You can also provide blankets or warm beverages for guests to enjoy if they choose.

Outdoor receptions — Outdoor receptions will require more planning. The average reception lasts 4-5 hours and that’s far too long for guests (and you!) to be uncomfortably cold. Here’s how you can combat the cold:

Indoor ceremonies and receptions — Create an outdoor space with patio heaters, seating and blankets to accommodate guests who want to step outside.

    Rainy conditions

Outdoor ceremonies — Have a backup plan. It’s not fun or exciting, but a Plan B might save your ceremony. Light rain doesn’t have to alter your plans, but a thunderstorm might. If you go through with the ceremony during light rain, give your guests umbrellas to help them stay relatively dry.

Outdoor receptions — To make an outdoor reception work in the rain, you’ll need to rent a tent. Without a tent, you’re out of luck. Furthermore, consider the ground the tent is on.

Don’t put it on the grass unless you’re ready for a mess.

Indoor ceremonies and receptions — If you desire, have umbrellas handy for anyone who needs to step outside and perhaps place extra floor mats near the door to contain the water being tracked inside.

    Hot, sunny conditions

Outdoor ceremonies — Large patio umbrellas are a great option for hot days. They might not add to the aesthetic you envisioned for your ceremony, but guests will appreciate a small reprieve from the heat. Handheld umbrellas are nice, too, along with sunglasses and handheld fans. These can be placed in baskets or bins for guests to grab as they please.

Outdoor receptions — Ensure the venue has a shaded area where guests can take a break from the sun. Large fan rentals are a great option, too. They keep the air moving and guests comfortable. Lastly, make a point to have plenty of ice-cold water available.

Indoor ceremonies and receptions — Enjoy the luxuries of air conditioning! Your guest should be comfortable and able to enjoy your wedding day.

Think of the possible weather conditions that might pop up on your wedding day, then prepare for them. That way, you’ll be ready to shift plans at the last minute — but only if necessary.
