Rent the Right Paint Sprayer
Rent the Right Paint Sprayer
- Type of paint sprayer. Renting an airless paint sprayer works best for big painting projects, whereas an airspray paint sprayer may make more sense for fine finishing. See Paint Sprayer Rental Options for more information on paint sprayer types.
- Style. Do-it-yourself homeowners often prefer to rent lightweight, hand-carried paint sprayers, whereas professional contractors generally rent larger, wheel-mounted units.
- Power supply. You can rent either an electric or gas-powered paint sprayer. Gas-powered, paint sprayers do not require a generator or other electrical source, which makes them ideal for rural or new-development applications. Electric models usually suffice for most residential or commercial applications using alkyd and latex paints.
- Output capabilities. The gallons of paint a rented paint sprayer can distribute a minute determines its output capabilities. A 1/3- to 1/2-gpm paint sprayer suits most homeowner and small-contractor projects that require applying latex paints. However, a 1-gpm paint sprayer may work better when applying thicker materials or oil-based paint. Paint labels often state the necessary paint sprayer output.
- Tip size. Paint sprayer tips determine the fan width and the amount of coating you will spray. You can ensure good painting results by using the tip size needed for your coating, on a rented airless paint sprayer that supports it. Labels for coatings often recommend the appropriate tip size to use on the paint sprayer. As a general rule of thumb, though, you can use .011 to .013 tips for lacquers and stains, .013 to .015 tips for oil-based paints, .017 to .023 tips for latex paints and .021 to .041 tips for heavy coatings.
- Easy to use. Most rental stores rent uncomplicated, easy-to-use paint sprayers.
- Digital readout panel. Some paint sprayer rentals offer a digital readout panel that indicates spraying pressure. The readout also may provide information on the amount of time and paint used on a job, which can help you adjust your estimates as the painting project advances.
- Extension cord length. The amount of extension cord you can use with a rented paint sprayer without losing the power necessary to operate it properly varies by model.
