  • Properly secure rented stump grinder when you transport it.
  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as a hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective boots and gloves.
  • Never wear loose clothing or jewelry that can catch on the rented stump grinder during use.

  • Keep onlookers at an appropriate distance from the worksite.
Usage tips
  • Rent the appropriate stump grinder from your local ARA-affiliated rental store. See Stump Grinders for Rent for descriptions of types of stump grinders that you can rent.
  • Clear the stump and surrounding area of any rocks or debris.
  • Situate the rented stump grinder on level ground for use.
  • Check and, if needed, service fluid levels in rented stump grinders before use.
  • Follow manufacturer’s recommendations for starting and shutting off the rented stump grinder’s engine.
  • To grind stump, position the stump grinder’s cutter wheel above the stump, slowly lower it to the stump and work the grinder from side to side over a small area of the stump until you reach the desired grinding depth. Then, move to the next area and repeat the process. Continue in this manner until you have cut the entire stump. Do not force the rented stump grinder into the stump. Instead, let the grinder’s cutting wheel do the work.
